Music Academy of the West’s 72nd Summer Season Opens Next Monday, June 17; First Month Features Festival Debut of London Symphony Orchestra with Daniel Harding, Plus Thomas Adès, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Isabel Leonard, Matthias Pintscher, and More

The Music Academy of the West’s 72nd Summer Festival launches next Friday, June 14 with a star-studded Opening Night Gala dedicated to pianist Jerome Lowenthal. We anticipate a sold out event to kick off the Festival. Following that, we’ll have more than 170 events through August 10 attended by more than 40,000 people at the Music Academy, the Granada and Lobero Theatres, and the Santa Barbara Bowl (Sun, Jul 14). We have fellows joining us here in SB from 22 states and 18 countries and 70 national and international guest artists who will be in residency.

Our Signature Festival Conductor of our London Symphony Orchestra and Music Academy of the West partnership is Michael Tilson Thomas, Music Director for the San Francisco and New World Symphonies. Unfortunately, he has to have cardiac surgery in June and is not able to be here. He will be replaced in two concerts by Daniel Harding and in one by Thomas Adès. The details are here.

A complete schedule of events is found in the attached pdf at the bottom of the page and available online at musicacademy.org.

The Music Academy of the West’s 72nd annual Summer School and Festival opens next Monday, June 17, launching eight weeks of concerts, recitals, and masterclasses at the picturesque oceanside campus and throughout scenic Santa Barbara. As part of its first transatlantic educational partnership, the Academy presents the historic festival debut of the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), which travels to Santa Barbara for three programs under the leadership of LSO conductors Elim Chan and Daniel Harding. The opening month also features four Academy Festival Orchestra concerts conducted by returning favorite Larry Rachleff, Matthias Pintscher, and Harding, who leads the orchestra alongside the LSO in the annual Community Concert. Other first-month highlights include an Opening Night Gala to mark the Academy’s five-decade-long association with distinguished pianist Jerome Lowenthal; an Academy Chamber Orchestra concert with Thomas Adès; and recitals by pianist Jeremy Denk, the Takács Quartet, and two of the summer’s resident Mosher Guest Artists: mezzo-soprano and 2005 alumna Isabel Leonard and French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard.  For details of the full festival, which runs from June 17 through August 10, click here.
