SBWPC Honors ‘Wonder Woman’ Hannah-Beth Jackson

November 6, 2020 @ 5:30 am PST

The Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee (SBWPC) is
bringing back “Cosmopolitics,” with a virtual twist. One of SBWPC’s most popular events,
Cosmopolitics is an evening of socializing and lively conversations about important political issues
facing women in California and the USA. This year’s event is no-cost and taking place via Zoom on
Friday, November 6, 2020, from 5:30-7PM.

California Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson, who is also a founding member of SBWPC, will be honored
as a political Wonder Woman. Jackson is ending her 14 year in the state senate this year. Just last month
she had her final legislative session while presiding over what has been described as ‘a cliffhanger of a
nail-biter’. Still, Senator Jackson managed to secure the final vote needed to pass a bill that supports
women and families, in her remaining minutes of her time in the legislature.

“We had no doubt that Senator Jackson would continue fighting for women and families right up to the
very end”,” said Luz Reyes-Martin, SBWPC President. “She showed even in this final legislative
session the fighter she is for equal rights. “

This year’s Cosmopolitics will also recognize two women who exemplify SBWPC’s feminist values.
Santa Barbara City Council Member Alejandra Gutierrez will receive the Rising Star Award, and Santa
Barbara Unified School Board member Wendy Sims-Moten will receive the Roses Award for her years
of feminist work.

“The Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee has two important recognitions that we award to
women who exemplify our feminist values,” said Luz Reyes-Martin, SBWPC President.

“We were strong supporters of Councilmember Alejandra Gutierrez’s candidacy last year. In her first
year in office, she has demonstrated that she asks tough questions and was ready to step into this
important leadership role. We know we will see more of Alejandra’s leadership and wish to recognize
her as a Rising Star.”

“The Roses Award is a very special recognition we bestow on a woman who has shown exemplary work
and service towards achieving our shared vision of a society based on our shared feminist values.
Through her advocacy for early childhood education, for her work supporting public education as a
School Board member, and as a leader in the Black/African-American community, we are thrilled to
recognize Wendy Sims-Moten.”

Cosmopolitics 2020 on Friday, November 6, from 5:30-7:30 PM, virtually on Zoom, brings together a
diverse group of politically engaged feminists and their supporters. Admission is free, though donations
to SBWPC are welcome. For more information and to register to attend, go to sbwpc.org/events.
