Legal Scholar and Social Justice Advocate Michelle Alexander

New York Times columnist Michelle Alexander is the author of The New Jim Crow, the acclaimed bestseller that “struck the spark that would eventually light the fire of Black Lives Matter” (Ibram X. Kendi). Marked by a special 10th anniversary edition release, her celebrated book continues to peel back the curtain on systemic racism in the American prison system. A legal scholar, social justice advocate and visiting professor at Union Theological Seminary, Alexander takes a hard look at racial injustice in the modern legal system to reveal how mass incarceration has come to replace segregation. She offers a new perspective on the challenges facing the civil rights community and a rousing call-to-action for a multi-racial, multi-ethnic human rights movement for justice in America.
This conversation with Victor Rios, UC Santa Barbara Professor of Sociology and Associate Dean of Social Sciences, will be followed by a Q&A.
