Lights, Love & Community returns for its second year to provide Isla Vista residents an opportunity to come together
and celebrate the holidays. On Friday, December 3rd from 6-8pm the Isla Vista Recreation & Park District (IVRPD) will
host a one-night event to kick-off the month-long lighting (December 3rd – January 3rd) of the St. George Youth and Teen
Center, Estero Red Barn, Honorary Holiday Tree, IV Rec & Park District Office, and Little Acorn Park fence line.
“Our wish this year is to ring in the holiday season with joy, gratitude, and a celebration of the friendships that unite Isla
Vista as a strong community”, said IVRPD General Manager Kimberly Kiefer. “We hope everyone gets a chance to
celebrate with us.”
The event is free and open to all Isla Vista community members. The kick-off event features live music from the local Las
Olas Mariachi Band, meals provided by the Kiwanis Club of Santa Barbara, including churros from Fernando’s Churro
Truck, and beverages provided by the Isla Vista Foot Patrol. Goody bag distribution and an ornament decorating table is
sponsored by the St. George Youth and Teen Center – all food, beverages, and goody bags are free while supplies last.
The goal of Lights, Love & Community is to create an opportunity for community members to come together and
celebrate the holidays and provide a space for people to interact with each other in a positive, safe environment that
will help strengthen the community bond, while also providing some holiday joy throughout the month of December
with the lighting of various park sites.
To mark the occasion, Third District County Supervisor Joan Hartmann stated, “Once again, the IVRPD is going the
distance to activate community parks throughout IV by providing a safe, creative, and welcoming event for all Isla
Vistans to enjoy. I hope community members have the chance to visit the light installations and reflect on this most
extraordinary year. Happy holidays to all!”
