Snowy Plover Docent Training

September 21, 2022 @ 11:00 am PDT

Coal Oil Point Reserve is the first place to restore a nesting site that had previously been abandoned by a threatened species of shorebird, the Western Snowy Plover. Our docents play a HUGE role in this success by educating the public about Snowy Plovers and ensuring that the protected areas are free from trespassing and off-leash dogs. We are looking for volunteers to spend 2 hours a week on Sands Beach, teaching visitors about the threatened status of the Western Snowy Plover. Docents also ask beachgoers to leash their dogs and to avoid sensitive habitat areas. The training will focus on the ecology of Snowy Plovers, their habitat needs, and successful strategies for communicating with the public.

To sign up for the training, please email copr.conservation@nrs.ucsb.edu
